Sandhya Srigiriraju, University Of Hyderabad

The population of Hyderabad Urban Agglomeration (HUA) was 26 lakhs in 1981 census and it has increased by 17.3 lakhs during 1981-91, 14.1 lakhs during 1991-2001 and by 19.3 lakhs during 2001-2011. Of the population of HUA, migration contributed 25 percent in 1991 census, and 24 in 2001 census. In 2011 out of 76.7 lakhs of population, 49.4 lakhs are migrants (constituting 64 per cent) indicating that migration is an important contributing factor in the growth of HUA. So it is important to study the characteristics of migrants to the agglomeration and its contribution to economic growth. The paper aims to analyse the quantum of in migrants, streams of migrants, duration of residence and age and marital status of migrants and the reasons for migration. Further age, literacy and occupational profiles of migrants who migrated for employment reason were analysed. Data on reasons for migration indicate that the employment and family movement are predominant reasons for migration among males, and family movement among females in rural- urban and urban-urban streams in 1981 census to 2011 census. The findings of this paper give important policy suggestions to tackle the problems of migrants in HUA and also providing technical skills to them to enhance their contribution to economic growth.
