Suicide is leading cause of death among youth in India; yet mental health infrastructure is poor where a lot of stigma is associated with it. This context warrants an exploration into adolescent wellbeing to understand flawed adulthood transition. Analysing a sample of 240 brother sister pairs from rural India, this research focuses on the nurturance factor of maternal socialization influencing wellbeing. Maternal socialization includes support, psychological and behavioural control while wellbeing comprises depression, self-esteem and life satisfaction. Results show that there is no significant differences in wellbeing for sibling pairs, and multivariate analyses proves that maternal support acts as a protective factor against depressive symptoms and fosters self-esteem and life satisfaction. Friendship also plays an important role in adolescent well-being along with maternal support. Thus, support from the mother can play a major role in determining how young people cope with despair, especially because of the dearth of professional help.
