Education and Employment Status of Disabled population in India: Hurdles and Opportunities for a Better Future

Anandi Shukla, International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS)

India consists of about 26.8 million of the disabled population (Census 2011), which was around 1.8%, i.e., 18.5 million in the 58th round of NSS (National Sample Survey 2002). Research has shown that the actual prevalence is expected to be more than the percentage calculated. The people living with a disability are already considered to be deprived in a sense. Many social and physical barriers are there that hinder their progress. In this study, we try to find the status of disabled people in education enrollment and work status. Most people have to leave their work because of the difficulty faced in the workplace or transportation. Here, we will try to see the association between the work-friendly environment and work status of disabled people after the onset of disability. This study will give an accurate picture of the hardship faced by disable people to attain education. This study will also try to analyze the effect of training and aid received on their work status.
