The objective of this study is to describe the reasons for maternal near misses (MNMR) observed in the 27 Brazilian Federation Units, in the period from 2010 to 2019. This is a descriptive epidemiological study, with data extracted from the Hospital Information System of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). The NMMR were calculated considering hospitalizations due to obstetric causes of women of reproductive age, in public hospitals or those associated with the SUS. The identification of maternal near miss cases was performed by matching the diagnostic criteria recommended by the World Health Organization and the International Classification of Diseases (CID 10) codes used to inform the cause of hospitalization. In the period analyzed we observed important inequalities in the indicators of the five regions of Brazil, with the highest ratios recorded in the Federation Units of the North and Northeast regions. From the results found it is possible to carry out new analyses to identify the main factors associated with the maintenance of the high maternal mortality ratios in the country, since the cases of maternal near miss share similarities with maternal death.
