Socioeconomic differentials in health and mortality are existing in India with more deprivations for backward caste. The degree of deprivation by social groups has been deep and also camouflaged and disguised when life expectancy at birth (e0) is not provided by government. The objectives of the study are (1) to construct the abridged life tables by the wealth quintile and caste groups and (2) to examine the mortality differentials. Results show that e0 is higher for women than men across all the wealth quintiles and caste groups. e0 is the highest for both men and women in the richest wealth quintile and vice-versa. Similarly, e0 is highest in the General caste’s men and women than the socially deprived caste SCs, STs and OBCs. The gap in e0 between the rich and poor wealth quintile of households is 8 years for men, women and total. Similarly, the gap in e0 between the SCs and General caste is 10 years. It is noticeable that there are substantial socioeconomic differentials in e0 exists in India. The country needs to launch the targeted policies which can reduce the health disparities in India and lowers the socioeconomic differentials in e0.
