Socio-demographic factors affecting under registration of marriage in India

Marriage registration was started in the mid of the 19th century in India, But still, the coverage remains low in many parts of India. The study's objective is to understand socio-demographic factors affecting the under register of marriage in India. Primary data were collected through mapping and listing in the high child marriage prevalence district of Rajasthan in 2019-2020. A total of 150 women who got married in the last five years at the time of the survey were interviewed. The results from the study 40 percent of women have registered for their marriage. Women who have never attended or less than ten years of schooling were more likely to under register their marriage. Compare to not working women, working women more likely to register for marriage. Belong to OBC, and other castes are registered their marriage as compare to SC and ST. The findings show that various socio-demographic play an essential role in registering a marriage. The government and NGOs need to create awareness to register all marriages with the local community. Marriage registration is also crucial to eradicate child marriage.
