Determinants of Delay in First Pregnancy: Evidence From a Cohort Study in Bihar, India

Background: The study aims to examine the factors affecting delaying first pregnancy among adolescence in Bihar, India. It also examines the effect of decision making, self- efficacy and family/sex life education (FLSE) during adolescence. Data Source: Secondary data from state-level cohort survey – UDAYA in Bihar. Present study followed a cohort of women in age-group 15-19 years at baseline,2007 and follow up survey 2016-17. Methods: The association between selected background variables from baseline survey with delay in first pregnancy from follow up survey was tested using cross-tabulation, chi square test, and f-test. Further, the study utilized adjusted binary Logistic regression to draw inferences from the data. Results and Conclusion :Education, self-efficacy, decision making supports in delaying her first pregnancy. Family life/sex education programmes for adolescents and young girls are already in place. However, very low coverage of these suggest a need to relook the gaps and barriers of the implementation, that can help them in the transition to healthy motherhood.
