This study seeks to analyze certain transitions over the course of a woman’s life, namely, forming unions, leaving the parental home, and accessing the labor market in order to assess their impact on the probability of either motherhood or childlessness in Spain. The data used for the analysis are taken from the 2018 Fertility Survey (FS2018) conducted by the Spanish National Statistics Institute. This survey provides a complete history of births, marriages, emancipations and the majority of career paths, whereby the sequence of events can be ordered and longitudinal-survival models applied in the analysis of those paths and their impact on reproduction. The results reflect the significance of the transitions considered in motherhood and childlessness. Forming a union is the main transition leading to motherhood, with the effect differing depending on the type of union, its stability, and the economic and employment circumstances involved. Leaving the parental home also has a major impact on the likelihood of motherhood, although its effect also depends on the economic, marital and employment situation. Finally, access to employment favors motherhood, albeit to a lesser extent than the other transitions.
